How coaching has added value to my life:
My life before Coaching; I’d been told I was a good listener, however, I would have been very quick to dish out advice, based on previous personal experience or the old; I’d a friend line. I wanted to do something to help people, I sought advice from a friend about becoming a Counsellor. They suggested Coaching, which I goggled. An open night with PSG came up during my search so I booked in, the rest, as they say is history.
December 2016, I completed my PSG Life & Executive Coaching Course, this was the life changer for me. I started to look closely at every aspect of my life. My thoughts, my inner dialog basically my whole world, what I read, watched & the type of people I surrounded myself with. Slowly over time, I have brought new habits in to my life. Last year, I started attending a weekly guided meditation, I found it enormously helpful for my general feeling of wellbeing. Wednesday became my favourite day of the week, I downloaded the app ‘Insight Timer’ so I could have a guided meditation each day. I enjoy experiencing life, heavily meditated.
I recently added mBIT (multiple brain integration techniques) certification to my PSG Coaching toolkit. Checking in with my head/heart/gut, has really helped me tap in to my inner wisdom. Balanced breathing or diaphragmatic breathing; inhale for the count of six, exhale for the same, helps balance the ANS (Autonomic Nervous System) bringing an inner calmness to my daily life.
My best surprise from coaching; I don’t need to be an expert on any given subject, the human in front of me is the expert on themselves, whole, resourceful & capable of choice, always take it from there.
To those who have yet to experience coaching, prepare to be amazed by the power of a human to human connection. Find a Coach you trust, talk on the phone, look at their on-line presence, if it resonates with you, contact them. During the totally-confidential sessions, be as totally honest & open as you can, let the magic happen.
My purpose in life is to help people, it starts with myself & my family then ripples out to friends, neighbours, colleagues & any human I come in to contact with, on a daily basis. Empathy is a huge value of mine, at times I’ve had to learn to turn it down a notch. As a young child I would be crying while my family howled with laughter watching ‘Laurel & Hardy’. I learned in later years, Stan Laurels’ daughter Lois was afraid of Hardy or ‘Babe’ as they called him, so Stan Laurel wrote a sketch where Stan wins out over Ollie. I often have to remind myself, during Coaching, it’s their success! Honesty & openness are important to me, they can get me in trouble at times, but used wisely, they can move a situation towards a positive outcome.
My sense of humour is with me always, this has helped me through countless tough situations. I like to make people laugh or to see the funny side, of perhaps a very difficult situation. Humour can be a great reset button when going through life challenges. My Mam has Dementia, on the frustrating days, knowing my Mam so well, I’ll say something to distract her and she’ll laugh. Thankfully, she has kept her sense of humour so it truly is a great asset to have.
‘I was dreaming I was awake and then I woke up and found myself asleep’ Stan Laurel
I love this line from Stan Laurel, it never fails to make me laugh. We all like to think we are fully awake/aware, then a light bulb moment can come through learning, Coaching or an ‘AHA’ moment, you realise your blind spots, triggers or biases. Life is about examining our thinking and questioning our bias. Perception is not reality, we constantly have to question our perception, try to see things from others point of view to grasp true reality.
