When something feels great – you feel it in the pit of your stomach
When reflecting on the last year, I am drawn to the beautiful memories that give me a special feeling in the pit of my stomach, the ones that catch my breath a little and cause an effortless smile to break out.
I want to keep these safe and deposit them deep in my heart so I can have them forever.
I also reflect on the times that I want to let go of – they also give me a special feeling, a feeling that I don’t want to replay, recall or recreate. I visualise them written on helium balloons floating up in to the cloudless sky.
Good bye, I don’t need you anymore, I am letting you go.
Speaking with my clients over the last couple of weeks they are saying the last 12 months were harder than any other year.
Yes, our lives have become more complex and we are living with more demands, more challenges and more expectations than ever before.
2016 is not going to be any easier, in fact, current research tells us life will continue to get more complex and challenging.
How are we going to get to the end of 2016 and have more beautiful memories to keep and savor?.
We need to face in to the truth that a story-change is necessary for all of us.
If you were to fast track to 31st December 2016, and you were reading the story of your life this year, think about what you would like the following content to be:
- What will the story be called?
- What will the chapter titles be? ( you want at least 12!)
- What will be explored?
- Where will the drama show up?
- How will the hero (you) win out over the baddie ( your self-doubt)
- What simple mistakes will you make (again) – when you do, how will you recover?
- What will be the key theme of the story?
- Where will the most meaningful lessons be?
It is our responsibility to write, produce and act in our lives so we arrive at the end owning beautiful experiences to hang our memories on.
What we need to do is get ourselves set up to be the person brave and ready enough to be in the story.
Are you that person yet?
We need to be up for the battles and the falls, knowing its the only way to stretch and grow. Knowing it’s the only way to build the muscle set necessary to get us through this complex world we live in.
The quality of our relationships and support system will largely determine how our story for 2016 ends.
Who we spend our time with, who we ask for help, who we give our power away to is more important than ever. We can no long afford to waste or give our energy to people or tasks that are not of benefit.
We need to be braver than before, we can no longer put things off, we need to be the story we want to read at the end of the year.
Beautiful memories matter – go build some!
Make 2016 matter

Thank you Maureen, I like a lot the idea of writing my story for next year, I believe it will give the focus, the clarity, the direction, the confidence and the strength I need to achieve my goals for this year. I’m going to start writing it today. Thanks again this was an inspiring post. Maria
Great article, Maureen. I love the idea of looking back over the story of my year. Wonderful food for thought.
Thanks for all the replies, its amazing how we blame others for stories. I love being the author – we can make it as dramatic and exciting as we want.
