It’s that time of year when the days are getting longer, there’s more bird song. Trees and plants are coming back to life. It’s as if our countryside here in Ireland is waking up. It’s only a few weeks since people made and broke New Year’s resolutions (not everyone).
The energy of the land, the animals and plant life is changing. Over the coming months even the energy in the weather will change. This is why we start to do our spring cleaning. We look around the space we live in and the space we work in and maybe we have gathered some winter clutter that we now want to get rid of. Or maybe we look around our space and notice some clutter that we’ve been holding onto for years.
I recently worked with a client that was having trouble taking action. He had come to me because he wasn’t happy at work and wanted to explore changing his job. He was really nice to work with. Like everyone else once he relaxed with me and explored his life from different perspectives he noticed that his unhappiness at work was an effect of something else going on in his life. When I was helping him to examine his core values, I asked him…How do you fill your space at home? This question stopped him for a while and caused him to think. He told me that his house was full of clutter and had been for a long time. He suggested that the build-up of stuff in his house could be blocking him from taking action. After a few more questions about the type and volume of stuff he had stored in every available space of his house, he offered that he was holding onto a lot of things from the past that he would not use again. He suggested that maybe he was stuck because he valued the best more than the present or future.
Before the session was finished he set some goals around de-cluttering his living space. Within a few weeks there was a visible change in my client’s appearance. He was more upbeat and happy and he even started wearing a different style of clothes. He told me at a later session that he believed when his living space was cluttered it was like a reflection of his state of mind.
Even though a coaching session consists of talk and conversation, it’s the action that really has the value. When we start taking action and moving we let go of the past and we create space. What could you do today to make a start on your spring cleaning and mental de-clutter?
