As August was our ‘Capture the Moment‘ month I decided to walk my talk and reflect on what it means to me.
I began by asking myself: “Do I capture moments?” and this led to lots more questions and exploration. The answer however came to me by “accident”. I woke up one morning a few weeks ago not feeling particularly enthusiastic or motivated about the day ahead and knew that I had to do something to shift myself up a gear. A memory of my 3 year old nephew came to mind which catapulted me into a happier and excited mood and I pretty much skipped out the door.
Later that day I thought about what had happened that morning. I realised that today was not the first time this had happened and that there have been lots and lots of times where I have managed my mood, energy and enthusiasm by recalling “feel good” moments. I realised though that it’s not just thinking about those “feel good” moments that resulted in my energy shift but it was recalling the whole experience that did the trick. When the memory of my nephew came to me that morning, I could see his cute little face, his bright shining eyes, his HUGE smile, his animated and enthusiastic expression, I could hear the almost sing-song way in which he says “It’s morning time”, the inflections in his voice, the change in the pitch and tone of each word and the undertones of a little mischief. I could feel his love, his energy, his pure joy and happiness at being awake and starting a new day.
So having spent some time reflecting on “Capturing the Moment” I have come to the following conclusions:
* We can capture moments with more than one of our senses
* We can develop strategies for shifting our mood or mindset by capturing and recalling the moments that have an impact on us.
* My nephew rocks!!
