I am experiencing a common trend with my clients across the globe right now which is the need to coach and develop their leaders so they know ‘HOW TO’ inspire and engage people’s hearts and minds. These are the clients and businesses that continue to have the competitive advantage so if they have their finger on this pulse – we should pay attention.
I am struck by the idea that we have to ‘win’ the hearts and minds of others. ‘How do you WIN the heart and minds of others’ ? This implies it’s a game – is it a game of chance ? I don’t believe so.
As Simon Sinek tells us – start with WHY
Winning Hearts and Minds – Why do we want to win the hearts and minds of others..
Let’s look at some research
- Harvard Business School Professor John Kotter says for change, managers must motivate people by reaching their hearts as well as their heads, head-heart strategy not just head strategy.
- McKinsey research across a range of sectors proves that by paying sufficient attention to attitudes and behaviours of your people is critical to the success of sustaining change.
- Marchand and Peppard say, business change initiatives are about engaging the minds, hearts and values of people in making change happen and achieving shared business results and benefits, and not about possessing new tools, renewing legacy systems and standardizing technology to reduce costs.
How to win the hearts and mind of others
Have some coaching. Explore and develop your own attitude and aptitude for genuine engagements with people. Get to grips with your emotional intelligence – understand what you are working with and the real impact you have on yourself and others around you. Learn to effectively regulate your emotions to help support and control your behaviour and influence those around you.

Develop your power and ability to engage others on both emotional and intellectual levels. Be strong and succinct in story telling where your stories are current and carry substance to your audience. Dare to show your human side and care for people – really care – demonstrate you care. Dare to Care.
Love what you do. Connect your heart and mind. Show it in what you do.
What can you do to get to the heart of change..
I believe its deliberate conscious effort on your behalf to inspire and win the hearts and minds of others.
It takes effort and skill and may require you upgrading your personal operating system with some new mental processes and behaviours. This isn’t about downloading a new app to add on to what you already do, this is an upgrade to your whole operating system.
It’s your responsibility to mind what’s at the heart of your operating system .

I like how you suggest learning to express yourself emotionally in an appropriate way that creates positive emotional experiences. My boss told me that he would like to find a way to change the way he talks to his employees because he thinks that sometimes he can be very rude. I will suggest to him to contact an executive coach so that he can get advice.
Hi Derek, Self-awareness is certainly the first step towards change. Executive Coaching can help for sure. Wishing you and your boss a positive coaching experience!
