Heart and connection. Two interconnected words that evoke many thoughts and feelings inside ourselves and externally with others. There is a lot of energy spent on connecting with the people around us – to belong to the group, to influence work peers, to lead a tribe.
Connecting with others not only with our head but also our heart allows that authentic connection which inspires trust and sharing. We spend time building our technical skills through study and practical application using our focus and commitment to succeed.
Additionally we recognise that excellence in our technical skills is not enough for us to thrive as humans. In our personal lives or in our work lives, we need excellence in our people skills.
What are people skills? These are the heart of connection, of communication at level that can be trusted. They allow for the exchange of knowledge and ideas also but people skills are more than that – they start with who we are inside.
You can teach the technical aspect of communication skills but without the heart of connection, how effectively is the message delivered or received, does it produce the desired outcome? Is there clarity on what the desired outcome was, what it will look like measured?
We have the data, the science of communication, but it is the art, the heart that brings our communication to life, empowers our vibe that attracts our tribe. It is our truth, being our authentic selves that authorises us as leaders, endows us with our power to connect, influence and deliver results.
Designing the next great product or technical solution is absolutely worth your focus and commitment but in harmony with the people connection, it becomes significant. People do business with people and while we have amazing technical advances, the heart of connection is often the deciding factor between endurance and success.
