We have many intelligences which help us to achieve our goals and dreams. In the past IQ seemed to be the only game in town when it came to ascertaining the potential for people to be successful and it was also used as a measure of a person’s value. This has proved to be not only limiting for the person but also for many organisations who have selected candidates based primarily on qualifications.
I agree, qualifications are essential as they allow us to develop our knowledge and understanding and there are other important considerations. Does the candidate fit the culture of the organisation, how can their presence add value to and complement the talents the organisation already has? More and more organisations are looking at the values, beliefs and behaviours of the person, to view how these could fit with the organisations mission and the collective team. There is no longer a single dimension but a whole person approach.
This is increased awareness around what enables our success as human beings, in our relationships with ourselves and others both professionally and personally. We now work on multiple intelligences such as physical, mental and emotional so we can grow them with purpose, through effort and a commitment to be the best version of ourselves today, right now in the present moment.
Examples for physical intelligence include better sleep, self-care and for mental intelligence, developing a growth mind-set so as to be agile with change. With emotional intelligence, the more accurately we can develop our emotional awareness, the greater the strength we have to enjoy and live in the happy moments and recover more quickly when we meet an emotional trigger or experience distress.
It does not mean we will feel less but it does mean that we will have a great muscle to develop or dial down our emotional intelligence muscle when considering ourselves, others and environment. It enables us to develop more meaningful rapport and trust with ourselves and others in our personal and professional relationships. In developing our multiple intelligences we empower our energy to attain the goals we set and build resilience to recover more quickly when we hit some of life’s speed bumps.
