Being true to yourself is perhaps the greatest gifts any one of us can give ourselves and it is something that is within our own inner power. We hear so much about living values, being authentic and honouring our best selves and yet the courage that is required at times to be true to who we are can often be underestimated.
Sometimes we hide a little of who we are because we want to be kind, need to get stuff done, want to avoid the difficult conversations, we are embarrassed, shy even. Confidence to be true to who we are is perhaps the greatest challenge because we want to be liked, be accepted, we want to belong, want respect, to be included, sought out and valued. Yet in order for us to really attain each or all of these, we can only do so by being true to who we are. That sense of what you see is what you get, it enables each of us to build real, genuine connections with the people around us.
The first step to having the courage to be true to ourselves is to know who we are, to be very clear on our values and what they mean to us. This is all within us, spending time to get real clarity on what they are today and not what we were told they should be as children, by friends, colleagues or family but the ones that we have self-selected because they bring about a sense of harmony and inner peace when we live our daily lives in line with them.
They don’t have to be big, just simple, honest and true to how we want to treat people and how we get things done in a way that honours the very best that is us. This enables us to make the right decisions for ourselves and those important to us, to communicate directly so as to authentically connect and to have healthy boundaries in the right places, with the right people, at the right time.
Sometimes it’s the simple values that make the more powerful difference in being confident in who we are and to have the courage to live our lives to the fullest. When did you last check in with your Being True and what would Being True add to your life?
