After I qualified as a Coach with Positive Success Group, I explored how I could serve as a coach within the group sector as this was my interest. I started to develop a Goal Setting Workshop that I could deliver to groups. Fortunately within a short period of time, I came upon an opportunity to deliver these workshops regularly to small groups. These groups were attendees of Pure Results Bootcamp, owned by Kathryn Thomas of RTE’s “Operation Transformation” and “The Voice”.
The workshops were really well received. They were being delivered to the most accepting of audiences as all attendees at the camp had come for a reset or a kick-start to a healthier way of living. I gained confidence running these workshops over time but like all things, changes begin to happen. What started off as a goal setting workshop, became more holistic, more about sustained wellness. As I kept asking questions of the clients the answers would go deeper and deeper. I would ask “By achieving your goal, what would that allow you to do?” or “How would it feel to achieve your goal?” or “What would it give you?” In most cases, as I delved deeper and deeper all the clients just wanted to be happier and healthier. These people were looking for sustained wellness!
As a result of this, my workshop went back to basics and focused on the more simple things in life. Now when I say the simple things, they sound simple, but for most people are not easy. These are the basic everyday actions which keep us alive, what we eat, how often we move and how well we treat ourselves.
Regardless of our goals, whether they are professional, personal, sporting or other, there are general habits that we need to repeat daily to achieve that goal. The first one is what we eat. While we would never put anything into our cars other than petrol or diesel, we choose to sometimes take in fuel ourselves which does not encourage peak performance. If we eat well regularly, we can achieve our peak performance easier. If we take in bad food or bad fuel, we compromise our performance. Food is so powerful and is underestimated so often. Food affects our mood, our sleep, our concentration as well as out physical performance. We need to eat well to perform well.
When I ask groups if they have really regretted doing a workout or an exercise session in the past, I normally don’t get many admissions. There is a reason for this; exercise makes us feel good! Exercising releases endorphins in the body. Recent research has found that endorphins contain similar chemical properties to some pain management medication. That’s why we generally feel better after exercise. Exercise also encourages the production of Serotonin in the body. Low levels of serotonin are common in cases of depression and poor sleep patterns, so we need to keep our serotonin levels up. These are just some of the reasons that we need to exercise regularly to keep our bodies at peak performance. Whatever your goal or target is, regular exercise will help to keep you at peak performance levels to achieve your target.
Self-time is the time that I set aside for resetting and taking some time out. Even if we can take 10 minutes in the day to take a break from all the mindless chatter in our heads, it will be of huge benefit to us. We are surrounded by constant stimulation through digital technology, which makes it even more important to take a break, take some deep breaths, and relax the mind temporarily.
There are so many other daily habits that we need to practice to help support our journey to our goals, but normally it’s the journey that brings us happiness not the destination. By maintaining good nutrition, sustaining our fitness and incorporating wellbeing into our Everyday, we can achieve happiness at any stage. Then we are ready to strive towards our goals but we will do it from a base of feeling good anyway. This sustained wellness is the cornerstone of our existence and making the best opportunity of this time and space reality that we have the pleasure of experiencing.
