Every month we invite one coach from our community to become our Featured Coach for that month. This way they can share their knowledge, experience and insights. PSG: Since qualifying, what are the top 3 lessons you have learnt that support your growth as a coach:
1) Challenging everyone (including myself) to the “Edge of Chaos”.
As a Coach you want to make sure that every client moves to the next level. That could mean that they overcome fears they carried for years and move those fears to curiosity. The “What if” question is a powerful tool to trigger thoughts they never had before and move them beyond the next level to the Edge of Chaos.
There is nothing more powerful than if I see a client leaving my session and thinking “Oh, I can do that!!!”
2) Learning about myself, being vulnerable and creating my own coaching style.
During the training and then being a corporate coach afterwards taught me that I had to learn and accept myself as a person. That included allowing myself to be vulnerable. Both areas however shaped my coaching style and becoming clear on what kind of a coach I really want to be.
As part of my journey of being a coach, I read a lot and practiced different ways to find out what suits my personality best.
At some stage I had “created” my own style which should meet my top three values of being a good coach.
1) Being authentic
2) Being vulnerable
3) Having fun
As I am embracing all three areas, I now see that it boosts my confidence and has helped me to control the flow of coaching sessions.
I now accept myself that I am as brilliant as I want to be! and I see that I inspire, move and influence coachees positively.
3) Reflect on myself, learn from it and improve.
I am grateful to what I have achieved so far in my life. I always was a keen believer that continuous learning lead and leads to improving myself and subsequently my coaching.
The Coaching area is not a hands-off place and I am fully aware that I need to be clear that I have to bring my best to the sessions. As much as I want to move my clients to another level, I know that this only works if I move with them at the same or even a faster level.
I am constantly upskilling myself by reading, researching, and attending CPD courses. This helps me to improve from a business perspective but also from a personal level.
PSG: To – date, as a coach, what has brought you the most fulfillment?
The most fulfillment I get if clients testify that they move on to another level in their life. To get a feedback like “I never thought about it in that way” or “it wasn’t something I would have done but I will definitely try it” motivate and fulfill me.
I am proud that I even can share a coaching experience which still is a highlight of how I fulfilled my role as a coach. I coached a successful entrepreneur who contacted me looking for coaching on his legacy and also his approach to find a “new” life purpose after his successful career. During the sessions, he rediscovered so many (big and small) goals which he hadn’t thought of. It was so powerful to see him changing and challenging his thought process and see him also growing in those areas which could (re-)shape his future life journey.
PSG: What do you foresee as the key skills our clients will want to focus on for development and growth for the remainder of 2017
As I am focusing on Business Coaching (Sales, Executive and Leadership etc.) I want to focus my development on agility in the business to address complex changes in today’s corporate world.
The organisations have to accept the changes and develop talent that can embrace constant change which will be key to the future success of the company.
I believe that Coaching in the business place will grow and will become an integral tool to help leaders, teams, and organisations thrive in constant change.
I therefore will focus on using a variety of external, internal, team, and group methods of coaching like
• Develop highly adaptable leaders
• Build up a resilient workforce on every level
• Create a diverse human capital pipeline
• Increase the organization’s use of technological advances
• Improve the company’s culture.
My development goal has to be that I am ready to learn how Coaching will help organisation adapt, innovate, and grow.
