“He Who Dares – Wins, Rodney. He Who Dares – Wins!”
(DelBoy – Only Fools & Horses, BBC Comedy).
The above quote is from that lovable rogue and rascal – “Delboy” in the BBC comedy series Only Fools & Horses. “Delboy” is a colourful character and full of new ideas that are oftentimes doomed for failure even before he has started. He’s full of great schemes and plans but ultimately his execution and clumsiness let him down. What is really admirable about him is his take-a-chance attitude and his bravery to always give things a “GO”.
Now, think about the last 9 months of your year. I bet like of all of us you started off with enthusiasm and bright spark ideas for all the new ideas and dreams that you were going to bring to fruition. Where are they at now? Did they get going at all? Can you really say that you have given those important plans of yours a real GO?
Well done, if you have had the tenacity to make those much desired changes a reality. But if you are looking back now as we head into the last quarter of the year and still seeing your ideas lying idle on the hard shoulder then ask yourself this question – Have you really given your important things a “GO”? You see nothing changes or no result is reachable until you press the “ GO” Button. By this I mean showing up for yourself and taking the specific actions that gets your ideas out of your head and into reality. Those first steps forward provide real evidence that you are making change and creating a new result. And yes, it takes courage to be clumsy, unsure and uncomfortable and to challenge your perceived ineptitude and to chance your arm at something, at anything really – just like “Del”.
And that’s what I admire about Delboy – his ability to keep going , to keep adapting and coming up with new ideas. What I most especially admire in him is that he is always willing to take a gamble and give it a GO! Delboy would prefer to give it a GO and end up with egg on his face than be known for not trying at all and living with that disappointment. He never wants to be an “also-ran”. I’ve had to do the same myself these last 12 months and even though some of my results are not what I had initially planned for, I know at least that I have given it a GO. That for me is a far greater success than not having done anything at all.
So with a few months left to the end of your year there is still time for you to press the “GO” button. Ask yourself what do you need to do right now to bring your plans back on track? How exactly can you implement those all important changes that you’ve been promising yourself for almost ‘forever’. What resources do you need to turn the key in the ignition and get yourself moving forward in this last quarter? Who can give you that kick-start to go from stalling and resisting to that forward momentum and the energy and satisfaction that comes with it.
As soon as you’ve finished reading this, go get some pen and paper and write down the 3 specific actions that will get your plans back on track and move them forwards pronto. Give yourself a maximum of 72 hours (write down a specific time/date) to have completed these actions by or at the very least some specific part of them. Only then will you have really pressed the “GO” button and moved forward towards your all important goals. Nothing changes till you do.
It’s time to press the GO button – so GO GO GO! You don’t want end up a right “Rodney” now do ya?
