Some time ago I wrote a post titled “Half a Life” that was bravely asking every reader to check if the life they were living is “full fat” or just “semi-skimmed”. What would you say? What would you prefer?
A full fat life? Meaty? Juicy? Enjoyable?
Well in words maybe, in thoughts maybe. When it comes to actions there are areas where we all hold off. I often hear people talk with great excitement about their passions and dreams but not much happens after that. It breaks my heart to see and hear people with great potential not moving forward. And no, many of them don’t get coaching. What’s missing here? There must be more to it than what we are noticing on the surface. What is the reality of our motivation?
A clever balance between thinking, emotions and actions seems to be the key.
Among us, there are those who put thinking first. We have to be well prepared, right? Preparation, in every sense of this word, comes first. I have to put my hand up and say – for a long time this has been me. No action until I’m fully equipped and ready. Until I have everything and I know everything… this will be… never?
Yes, I’m working on getting real here. With this approach all you get is safety, some progress but definitely not much fun and (speaking from experience) it can get pretty boring – an – Are we there yet? – kind of a situation.
There are those who live life somewhat without awareness and thinking. Instead of conscious planning and preparation they get excited and go for it, hoping that life will provide answers as they go along. They will figure it out afterwards, right? Sounds like a great approach, but only sometimes. Saying “Yes” based on a deep desire to move forward is always a good thing, but it can backfire without the stage where we actually slow down and take time to get to the bottom of things… This means having barely any answers, taking risks based on desire to succeed more than on rational thinking. Some actions cannot be justified by an amazing level of excitement. The cost of time and energy is too high and those resources of too much value. You do have to truly “want it” first, I get that. But doing without knowing? No, thank you.
I also know people who take action ignoring everything else. I will risk a statement here that they choose to do it especially if a certain approach worked in the past. Without updating their awareness and out of touch with their emotions they push forward. Not all the actions bring required results but the evidence is ignored. Doers do and this is what matters. The challenge here in my view is the choice, that in fact is not being made.
What are my main priorities?
Why am I choosing these as my priorities and are they what Keith Ferrazzi calls high-return practices?
Or even a step further –what return would be of most value to you and your goal?
All these questions require answers. Answers mean thinking before taking action in the same way .
Think – Feel – Act
“There is no more retarded use of time than doing something excellently that needn’t have been done at all”. Brian Tracy
Can you see where I’m going with this?
We need a balance of all the elements to benefit from a juicy, fulfilling life. Life where no minute is wasted on activities that don’t need to be done. Time is respected and energy invested. Our talents and potential are not hidden from the world waiting for the perfect time and place to be revealed.
Live Every Minute – Love Every Minute
Do it in your own time and at your own pace but GET TO ACTION! Don’t wait. Live every minute. Prepare and plan your next steps. Allow yourself to find joy in every stage of the process and take action, that’s well thought out, specific and is going to bring a high return.
Choose to make the most of who you are and what you have to offer. Close the gap between thinking and doing. Choose your battles and choose them wisely. So you can actually enjoy the best possible results.
“Wouldn’t it be nice…” or “Maybe I will…“are not enough. Are no longer enough.
Sometimes it means bravely stepping in and stepping up. Otherwise you won’t make it happen. Yes, that’s right, you have to make it happen. So get to the best informed decision, get your excitement on and go live.
