What do all people who achieve success either in their professional or personal life have in common? To find the answer to this we need to look to those who we class as “achievers” and find out what is their Magic Sauce.
Having attended the Pendulum Summit in Dublin recently, I was struck by the patterns in the stories from all the inspiring speakers.
Pat Falvey, entrepreneur and adventurer, spoke about climbing Everest and that’s just one of his amazing achievements
Deborah Searle, professional adventurer, spoke about rowing the Atlantic solo as a novice rower for 111 days.
Many speakers from all walks of life had valuable contributions whether they were 60 second speakers or a master class from Deepak Chopra
Again and again I noticed a pattern with each speaker…
- They all failed first
- They choose their winning attitude as a daily practice
Attitude is the difference that makes them different
Deborah Searle made a call to her twin sister Hayley mid-way across the Atlantic wanting to give up. Her sister gave her a ‘kick up the arse’ talking-to and challenged her to picture herself arriving at the shore in Barbados, her family meeting her there, the look on their faces, the hug from her mother, the feeling of achievement and this put her in to a completely different mind-set. Deborah talks about talking stock of all the things that were going well, what she had achieved that far. ‘Inch by inch’ she called it, as some days that’s all the progress she would make. Imagine after doing 16 hours rowing to just move forward 1 inch! She realised that by putting her focus on things that were important to her and were real for her she could shift her attitude from ‘victim’ to ‘victorious’. This became her winning practice so much so she wrote on her boat ‘ Choose Your Attitude’ so she could be facing in to it every moment she rowed.

Who are achievers?
What I came away with from the Pendulum Summit on Friday was – we are all achievers!
Whether it was the amazing Mark Pollock or Joanne O’Riordan or Sonia O’Sullivan or Deepak Chopra – the message was clear, it was nothing to do with body, gender or colour how ever ordinary you are (or think you are), you can achieve extraordinary things – Everything is possible
What is their magic sauce?
Make it your daily practice to ‘Choose your attitude’ and everything is possible.
Make sure you take your daily dose of Magic Sauce to support your goals in 2015
