If you have ever tried to do something (I’m sure you have) you know how much our rational brain is involved in the process. We think about everything: the situation, circumstances, past experiences, others involved, “what ifs…”, “buts” and the future. There is a lot to consider or so our mind would have us believe.
Depending on the seriousness of the situation you’re facing or the decision you need to make, there will be more or less thinking. We like to have control or at least to think we do. In reality we know that our mind is not always our best friend and surely it is not always productive. Do we need to manage it? It’s to our benefit that we do. Otherwise it runs freely in the direction of it’s own choice that potentially serves no purpose. It will try to protect us from non-existent dangers or prepare us for the circumstances that will never occur. Eventually it will trade great action we could take to move forward for illusory safety. Have you ever gone into the “Should I…?” “Could I…?” “But what if…”space? Then you know what I am talking about.
As a result, we stop ourselves from reaching our potential, taking small steps today, from progress or change because we just need to think about it for a little bit longer. Contemplate, consider, deal with, analyse… over and over again.
Is there a question in your life that you have been asking yourself for months?
Is there an action that you intended to take a long time ago?
Is there a decision that you wanted to make and start something great but… you are still unsure?
Is there a relationship to end or build but you can’t see the woods for the trees?
What are you resisting by pushing back, questioning and trying to control?
This is exactly the headspace of one of my coaching clients. Headspace indeed. What about the “heartspace”?
Just Surrender
Our conclusions about what’s happening come to us from different sources. Usually we ignore some to give way to those we favour more. What do you usually follow? Your gut, your heart or your head?
Are you brave enough to start with full awareness of all the sources of information that is available to you? Are you willing to experience it all? Are you willing to hear and see the whole picture?
Do you defend yourself at any cost (sometimes by attacking others or yourself)?
Are you brave enough to acknowledge hurt, love, excitement, shame, uncertainty, pain (emotional and physical) or would you rather continue to keep yourself “protected” with illusory sense of control over everything (how could that be even possible)?
Are you willing to live fully and just surrender?
How would it feel and what could happen if you stopped pushing back, just surrender and go where your heart or reality wants to take you?
There is another world of opportunities and possibilities when we get out of our own way, when we drop our own stories (as Byron Katie would say).
Letting go takes courage, but it’s time. It’s time to let go and surrender.
