You are gifted… Did you know that? … In fact, we all are.
We are naturally creative and resourceful as humans. What does that mean to you in your life? It means, that all the answers you are looking for, you already have. They are deep inside your mind, maybe locked away, but they are there. That’s also one of the reasons why coaching works so well. As coaches we know that clients don’t need our advice. They need to make use of their own natural resources and the answers – their own answers – will come.
So what can you do on your own when your coach is not around to facilitate the progress? Dust off your Thinking Cap and try Mindstorming.
Brainstorming has been around for decades, since Alex Faickney Osborn outlined it in his 1953 book titled “Applied Imagination”. It’s a great way of combining the power of many minds. Brainstorming happens when a group of people gather and generate as many ideas as possible. What’s important is to ensure that it’s a blame and judgement free process where funny, weird and even impossible ideas are valid. Now the question is: What can we do when we are on our own and want or need to generate ideas?
To benefit from your own creative thinking get into a habit of using Mindstorming. According to Brian Tracy, motivational speaker and author, this is how it works
- Think of a specific challenge or a goal and write it down on a blank sheet of paper in a form of a question. The more specific you are with you question the more precise your answers will be.
- Now think of 20 answers to your question and write them down. Be prepared – only the first few will flow. But don’t stop and keep thinking. Remember: the “no judgement” rule applies also here. According to Brian Tracy sometimes the most valuable ideas are the ones you come up with last. Use all your creative power and the answers will keep flowing.
- Once you have your list of 20 ready, read them and select the one you will act upon.
As with any other strategy for personal development what’s important is a will to take action. There will be no progress without it and the result of Mindstorming will be just a sheet of paper with a few words written on it. Treat it as an action plan.
An optional step at the end is to perform Mindstorming again on the chosen idea from the first list. What you want to achieve is to come up with 20 ways of putting this idea to work.
If you want, get others involved. Those around you have knowledge and experience you can benefit from. Switch into Brainstorming and find out how others approached or would approach your challenge.
The habit of creative thinking can change your life. Every time you perform Mindstorming it will get easier and you will start to feel much more confident. Why? Because you will know what you are capable of. “Challenge? Sure, maybe I don’t know the answer just yet but I know I can find it and I will”.
